Official: Union Berlin sign young Austrian talent

Union Berlin confirmed their second summer signing on Friday evening.

Having unveiled SV Wehen Wiesbaden striker Ivan Prtajin yesterday, 1. FC Union Berlin have also confirmed the rumored signing of young Austrian defensive talent Leopold Querfeld. Germany's Kicker Magazine reports that Union have acquired the 20-year-old via an exit clause in his contract with Rapid Wien. Kicker claims this amounts to approximately €2.5 million.

"Leo is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after central defenders of his age and has shown how strong his performance development is, not least with his final call-up to Austria's European Championship squad," managing director Oliver Ruhnert noted in a club statement, "With him, we are gaining a physically strong and courageous young player who will strengthen our defensive line."

"I consider this opportunity a very special one," the player himself added, "I aim to improve every day and gain a lot of experience at the highest level. At Union and in the Bundesliga, I see very good conditions for this and am ready for the tasks ahead."
