VfL Wolfsburg are exploring a surprising deal for 1.FC Union Berlin defender Danilho Doekhi, according to Sky Germany.

The report suggests Doekhi is one of two candidates for Wolfsburg as they look to bring reinforcements into the central defence.

Transfer journalist Florian Plettenberg notes that concerns in that position have increased after the 8-1 defeat against Bayern on Sunday.

One thing is already certain – Doekhi will leave his current employers from Köpenick on a free transfer in the summer.

As recently as Friday, the 27-year-old was already being courted by a pair of Premier League sides in Aston Villa and Leeds United.

So far this season, the Netherlands centre-half has featured in all 16 Bundesliga matches for Union Berlin, scoring an impressive 4 goals.
