Augsburg confirm Winther's permanent sale to Hammarby
FC Augsburg confirmed the sale of Danish Winther to Swedish outfit Hammarby IF on Thursday evening.
His current loan spell with Portuguese side GD Estoril Praia prematurely cut short, Danish defender Frederik Winther has now officially departed German football on a permanent basis. The 23-year-old Danish youth international is headed to Sweden's Hammarby IF on a deal permitted by virtue of the fact that incoming transfers are still permitted in the Scandinavian league. All three clubs confirmed the transaction on Thursday afternoon.
Augsburg have, according to Germany's Kicker Magazine, recouped most of the €1.3 million they initially spent to acquire Winther back in October of 2020. The Gentofte-native was sold for approximately €1 million with a 20-percent sell-on clause, per the journal. Some sources reported the the Fuggerstädter secured a €100,000 loan fee from Copenhagen's Brøndby IF when Winther was loaned back to his native country last.
The once highly regarded prospect only ended up making two German top-tier appearances in the four years he was under contract with the FCA. Winther didn't end up getting a chance under the head-coaching regime of his Danish compatriot Jess Thorup. After making 15 appearances on loan at Brøndby last spring, Winther was only deployed thrice in the Portuguese Primera since being loaned out in January.
