Xabi Alonso celebrates another injury-time goal for Leverkusen: "We just didn't want to lose"

Reacting to Bayer Leverkusen's late equaliser against Borussia Dortmund, Xabi Alonso said his team simply "didn't want to lose".

Bayer Leverkusen were on the verge of losing their first game of the season when they went down 1-0 to Borussia Dortmund on Sunday.

But as has been the case so often this season, Die Werkself avoided defeat with a goal in stoppage time, this time from Josip Stanisic, who made it 1-1 from a corner.

After the game, Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso was naturally delighted to see his team fight back to claim a late point.

“I was very motivated to play here in Dortmund. We wanted to play with good intensity and mentality,” Xabi Alonso told DAZN.

“The goal hurt us, but we kept going. We just didn't want to lose. That's why the goal was so emotional. It was nice to celebrate with the fans. It means a lot to all of us.”

Having already clinched the Bundesliga title, Leverkusen's main goal in the league is to remain unbeaten.

“Remaining so focused isn’t easy, but we have a challenge, which is to remain unbeaten. Every point helps towards that," said midfield linchpin Granit Xhaka.
