Report: Beierlorzer summoned before Mainzer board, dismissal may be imminent
Few would have expected that the mutinous week at Mainz would pass without consequences. Yesterday's 1-4 home defeat may have sealed the fate of 05er trainer Achim Beierlorzer.
German footballing magazine Kicker reports that Achim Beierlorzer was permitted to run Sunday morning's light training session at Bundesliga club FSV Mainz 05. Immediately thereafter, he was apparently summoned before the club's board for an emergency meeting on the status of the team.
Kicker notes that the meeting took place around noon and that an announcement about Beierlorzer's fate could come as early as this evening. A change of direction for the club would hardly come as a surprise, given that the players reportedly remain unified in their opposition to the club's treatment of striker Adam Szalai.
Even so, a major decision on a leadership change at the Pfälzer-Verein may be delayed until next week's international break. Football clubs often wish to minimize press intrusion by making their plans public when the footballing media is focused elsewhere.
Beierlorzer took over at Mainz for the sacked Sandro Schwarz last November. He managed to steer the Rheninhessen clear of relegation in the 2019/20 campaign, yet Mainz remain the pick of many to finish bottom of the table this season. Mainz have two assistant coaches possessing the necessary licensing requirements to fill in on an interim basis should Beierlorzer be dismissed.
