Martin Demichelis has had an inconsistent start as RB Leipzig head coach since replacing Ole Werner in the summer, with several heavy defeats away from home putting him under considerable pressure.
Saturday’s 2-0 win over Schalke 04 at the Veltins-Arena finally delivered Leipzig’s first away league victory of the season, with Demichelis using the occasion to make his position on the club’s expectations clear.
“I know that I have to achieve targets with RB Leipzig; that’s why I’m here. And if we don’t achieve those targets by the end of the season, then I’ll leave myself. That’s how it is. The people who know me know that very well,” Demichelis was quoted as saying by Bild.
While the club’s exact objectives remain unclear, qualifying for the Champions League is likely to be among the key targets.
Saturday’s win should ease some of the pressure on Demichelis, with Leipzig now sitting fourth in the Bundesliga table.
Nevertheless, the Argentine coach was quick to stress that there is still a long way to go this season.
“It was only our first away win. The season is still a long one,” he said.
