Eberl backs Neuer as Bayern maintain goalkeeping hierarchy despite Augsburg error

Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl has insisted that Manuel Neuer remains the club’s undisputed number one goalkeeper despite his costly mistake in Saturday’s Bundesliga clash against Augsburg.

The experienced shot-stopper came under scrutiny following Bayern’s encounter with Augsburg, but Eberl was quick to dismiss any suggestion that the error could prompt a change in the club’s goalkeeping hierarchy.

“There is absolutely no reason to question anything just because Manuel has made a mistake now,” Eberl explained, as reported by BILD.

While Neuer remains Bayern’s first choice between the posts, Eberl also highlighted the impressive development of his understudy, Jonas Urbig, who has continued to gain valuable experience alongside one of the world’s most accomplished goalkeepers.

“Jonas is developing exceptionally well, and Manu has played a very, very big part in that. He is still our number one,” the Bayern sporting director added.

Urbig’s progression has been a positive aspect of Bayern’s goalkeeping situation, with the young goalkeeper benefiting from opportunities to gain experience despite Neuer’s continued presence in the starting XI.

Eberl believes the club’s ability to develop Urbig while retaining a goalkeeper of Neuer’s calibre is testament to the approach taken by those behind the scenes at Säbener Straße.

“Without wanting to make too much of it, the way we have developed Jonas Urbig despite having a world-class goalkeeper like Manuel Neuer is quite remarkable,” he continued.

The sporting director also pointed to Urbig’s growing standing at club level, his increasing experience and his performances for the German national team as further evidence of his progress.

“The combination of Jonas now having this standing, already gaining this experience, and having performed excellently in his appearances for the national team is truly exceptional,” Eberl said.

He concluded by reaffirming his confidence in Bayern’s long-term approach to the position, insisting that the plan is progressing as intended.

“So far, the plan we had in mind is working out.”

For now, Neuer’s position at the top of Bayern’s goalkeeping hierarchy remains unchanged. Despite the latest error, the club’s message is clear: they continue to trust their veteran goalkeeper while allowing Urbig to develop into a potential long-term successor.
