Enrico Maaßen has been relieved of his duties as head coach of FC Augsburg with immediate effect, the Bundesliga club announced on Monday evening.

The decision comes after Saturday's 2-1 loss to Darmstadt, which has left Augsburg 15th in the table with five points after seven games.

"We took the time we needed after the first seven games and the defeat at home to Darmstadt to look at our current sporting situation and the development of our team," said Augsburg sporting director Marinko Jurendic.

"Following open conversations with Enrico Maaßen, we believe that we needed to change our head coach. Despite all their commitment and hard work, Enno and the team haven’t managed to buck the trend and be successful on the pitch."

Enrico Maaßen, who has been Augsburg's head coach since the summer of 2022, commented:

"I am naturally disappointed with this decision, because I am convinced that we would have been able to manage to turn things around together.

"I am grateful to FCA and the club’s management team for giving me the opportunity to coach in the Bundesliga. I wish FCA all the best for the future, and hope the foundations that we’ve laid together will help lead to success."
