Promotion battle in the 2. Bundesliga

The race for promotion to the Bundesliga has come down to the final matchday. Who will occupy the last spot?
The 2. Bundesliga promotion battle has provided endless drama leading up to the closing matchday to decide who will join the top league in German football. DSC Arminia Bielefeld have already punched their ticket to the Bundesliga by securing the Zweite Liga championship after matchday 32.

Second place, and the final direct promotion spot, has almost certainly been attained by VfB Stuttgart, unless they blow a goal difference advantage of 11 goals in the last game. This leaves third place, the playoff position, still up for grabs for either 1. FC Heidenheim 1846 or Hamburger SV.

FC Heidenheim can secure the playoff position with a win over current champs Bielefeld. Draw the game, and HSV could sneak in front with a win over SV Sandhausen. HSV are currently behind by only one point. If FC Heidenheim loses, a draw for HSV would be enough to secure the playoff position as they have the superior goal differential.

The playoff position holder in the 2. Bundesliga will face off with the relegation playoff position holder in the Bundesliga (16th place) to decide who will either join or remain in the Bundesliga.

In the Bundesliga, this will come down to the last matchday as well to determine if Fortuna Düsseldorf or Werder Bremen are in the relegation playoff.
