Ludovit Reis and Niclas Füllkrug scored after the 88th-minute mark to secure a memorable draw for Werder Bremen at Borussia Dortmund. However, the performance of the goalkeeper Karl Hein was the standout in the night where the visitors had to absorb Dortmund's pressure.
“It’s an incredible feeling,” the Estonian goalkeeper said after his heroic performance. “To fight back from 2-0 down and take a point away from Dortmund, you need to produce a fantastic team effort. It’s not the first time this season that we’ve shown this kind of spirit.
“I’m proud of our performance. We defended well and fought our way back into the game. I think I had a good night myself. Ultimately, I’m just trying to help the team pick up points, so I’m delighted that it worked out so well today. We’ve got plenty of games ahead of us, and I hope we can have a successful season together.” said Hein in his post-game interview (via Bremen’s website).
His coach Daniel Thioune also applauded the team’s resilient performance as Bremen repeated the Oliver Burke-inspired comeback from four years ago. “Today, we can proudly talk about resilience and our ability to fight back,” said the 52-year-old.
“The team were extremely disciplined and defended superbly. To come back from 2-0 down is impressive. The game wasn’t particularly entertaining for 70 minutes, but we weren’t looking to make it that kind of game. The lads deserve a round of applause for the way they fought their way back into it towards the end.”
Werder Bremen will face Paderborn and Mainz in the Bundesliga before their return to Dortmund for a second round DFB-Pokal tie.
