Stuttgart showed a great comeback performance after their exit from the European stage against Porto midweek with a statement 5-2 win over FC Augsburg. The Bavarian hosts showed spirit after the break, but a ruthless Stuttgart side proved too clinical, punishing defensive errors and underlining their top-three ambitions with an emphatic win.

Super-Undav opens the floodgates

The visitors struck early in the 12th minute in unusual fashion: Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen initially did well to claim a cross from Angelo Stiller, but the ball fell straight to Undav, who calmly slotted home to make it 1-0.

Stuttgart quickly took control and doubled their lead in the 29th minute. After a rebound in the box, Nikolas Nartey produced a clever backheel to set up Tiago Tomás, who finished confidently.

Just two minutes later, Stuttgart struck again. This time, a low cross from Maximilian Mittelstädt found Nartey, who capped an outstanding first half with a goal of his own to make it 3-0.

A penalty was briefly awarded to Stuttgart after Lorenz Assignon went down in the box, but VAR overturned the decision, showing he had kicked into Augsburg’s Han-Noah Massengo.

Aside from occasional efforts by Alexis Claude-Maurice, Augsburg offered little resistance in a one-sided first half.

Augsburg respond after the break

The hosts came out transformed in the second half, clearly energized by coach Manuel Baum.

Their improvement paid off in the 57th minute. After two attempts from Claude-Maurice were denied, Fabian Rieder reacted quickest to slot home into a half-empty net, reducing the deficit to 3-1.

But: Super-Undav responds instantly

Any hope of a comeback was quickly extinguished. Just one minute later, Undav struck again - this time reacting fastest to a loose ball in the box to restore Stuttgart’s three-goal cushion at 4-1.

Augsburg refused to give up and were rewarded in the 71st minute when Anton Kade battled the ball over the line with a sliding effort to make it 4-2. The hosts pushed forward with renewed energy and briefly threatened to make the game competitive again. However, their attacking intent left gaps at the back.

In the 83rd minute, a defensive error proved costly. Undav kept his composure and squared the ball to Ermedin Demirović, who tapped in to seal the 5-2 victory.

Stuttgart climb to third place

The result sees Stuttgart climb to third place in the Bundesliga table, strengthening their position in the race for European qualification.

Augsburg on the other hand, who had enjoyed a great spell from January to March, are now on a three-game losing streak.

The hosts showed heart - but the guests showed class, efficiency, and the clinical edge of a team with big ambitions.
