Bayern boss confirms long injury layoff for Ito

New Bayern Munich signing Hiroki Ito suffered a long-term injury in a friendly on Sunday.

Bayern Munich will be without new signing Hiroki Ito for a while.

The Japanese defender, who has joined the club from Stuttgart this summer, suffered a broken foot in a 1-1 friendly draw with Regionalliga side Duren on Sunday.

“The metatarsal is probably broken,” said Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl in an interview with Bild.

“Therefore, he will be out for a long time,” Eberl added.

Bayern have since released a statement in which the club confirm that Ito sustained a metatarsal fracture and that he will be out for ‘several weeks’.

“It's obviously a very bitter blow. We'll give Hiroki the best support so that he's back fully fit on the pitch as soon as possible,” said Eberl.

Bayern activated a reported €23.5 million release clause in Ito's contract to sign him.
