Despite Michael Olise and Manuel Neuer both taking part in Bayern Munich's final training session ahead of Tuesday's Champions League away clash against Atletico Madrid, it remains unclear whether – and to what extent – either player will feature.
Olise, who was forced off in the second half of Saturday's 2-2 draw with Borussia Dortmund, trained with his knee bandaged on Monday. Meanwhile, Neuer returned to team training after missing the previous three games due to a foot problem.
Speaking on Monday, Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl provided an update on the duo's fitness.
“As for Michael Olise, we’ll take another look at him tomorrow; we’re taking it day by day," Eberl said.
“It’s good that he’s travelling with us, because he’s an outstanding player who’s always a great asset. However, we’ll avoid the risk of it turning into a long-term injury. Manuel Neuer has been out for quite some time but has been training, so we’ll see how it goes,” he added.
Eberl also stressed Bayern's determination to return to winning ways in the Champions League after drawing their last two games in the competition, while acknowledging how difficult it is to come away with a positive result on the road against Atletico Madrid.
“It’s a top Champions League fixture. We need to show resilience right now. We must keep going if we want to win major titles, and that’s what we want. We want to win in Madrid. The points we dropped in Stavanger are still hanging over us; tomorrow we have a chance to make amends," he said.
“It’s definitely one of the trickiest away fixtures you can face in the Champions League, against opponents who are extremely tough to play against and possess a very high standard of quality, where we’ll have to bring to the game the resilience we’ve had to demonstrate over the past few weeks. They're a team who really will demand everything of us. We’re always under pressure, but we're still heading there to try to achieve the best possible result.”
