Bayern at their clinical best in dominant victory over Union

FC Bayern cruised to a commanding 4-0 victory over Union Berlin this afternoon, with goals from Serge Gnabry (2), Michael Olise and Harry Kane stretching their lead at the top of the table to 12 points.

It was a display of total control from start to finish by the league leaders, who were at their ruthless best at the Allianz Arena. Union, meanwhile, were left chasing shadows for much of the contest.

Bayern wasted little time asserting their authority, racking up 72% possession inside the opening ten minutes. Union’s approach was clear - sit deep, stay compact and hope to capitalise on any rare openings - but they struggled to execute it under relentless pressure.

Steffen Baumgart’s side offered virtually nothing going forward in the first half, as Bayern pinned them back and created a host of chances. Despite their dominance, the breakthrough proved elusive for long spells, until a decisive late flurry before the interval.

With two minutes remaining in the first half, Leon Goretzka clipped a precise ball over the top for Michael Olise, who controlled superbly, outmuscled Stanley Nsoki and cut inside before curling a fine effort beyond Frederik Rønnow to make it 1-0.

Bayern struck again in first-half stoppage time to deliver a crushing blow. Joshua Kimmich’s cross was poorly cleared by Rønnow, who could only punch it into the path of Serge Gnabry, and the winger made no mistake from close range to double the lead heading into the break. Bayern ended the half with a staggering 81% possession.

There was no let-up after the restart. Just four minutes into the second half, Harry Kane added a third, collecting a neat pass from Konrad Laimer inside the box, shifting it away from his marker and curling a composed finish into the corner for his 31st league goal of the season.

Union had no answer to Bayern’s relentless attacking waves, and a fourth arrived in the 67th minute. Olise was at the heart of it, gliding past two players in midfield before driving forward and firing a shot that deflected kindly into Gnabry’s path, allowing him to slot home his second of the afternoon.

Bayern remained in complete control thereafter. Olise was denied a second by the woodwork, while Kane squandered a rare one-on-one chance, but it mattered little as the hosts eased to a comprehensive victory.
