Borussia Mönchengladbach

Gladbach are sitting in 12th place and three points above the drop zone after winning four, drawing four and losing seven of their 15 league games this season. Die Fohlen went into the winter break on the back of consecutive defeats, which saw them lose 3-1 at home to Wolfsburg before falling to a 2-0 defeat away to Borussia Dortmund.

They will start 2026 with an outing at Borussia-Park, where they have won just once in eight Bundesliga outings this season. In fact, they have the third-worst home record in the division with a return of just six points on home turf.

Gladbach have also not beaten Augsburg since recording a 2-0 home victory in May 2023. The first goal could be crucial to their hopes of ending their wait for a head-to-head win, considering all four of their league wins this season have come after netting the opening goal.

Team News

The hosts are without the injured trio of Tim Kleindienst, Robin Hack and Nathan Ngoumou. Gladbach boss Eugen Polanski has also confirmed that Tiago Pereira Cardoso will miss the game due to illness.

Predicted lineup: Nicolas; Sander, Elvedi, Diks; Scally, Reitz, Engelhardt, Netz; Castrop, Neuhaus; Tabaković

Augsburg

Augsburg are languishing in 15th spot and just two points above the bottom three after winning four, drawing two and losing nine of their 15 league games this season. Interim boss Manuel Baum has taken four points from his three matches in charge, with three of those arriving in his first game against Bayer Leverkusen. Baum then saw his side lose 1-0 away to Eintracht Frankfurt, before they played out a goalless draw in their final outing of 2026.

The goalless affair made it seven points from three home matches, which is five more than they have picked up on the road all season. Augsburg have mustered just one point from their last six road trips since they beat Freiburg 3-1 in their first away league outing of the 2025/26 campaign.

While their away record is a cause for concern, the Fuggerstädter can take confidence from the fact that they have won their last three games against Gladbach, including a comfortable 3-0 victory at Borussia-Park last February.

Team News

Baum revealed at his pre-match press conference that Chrislain Matsima is set for an extended spell on the sidelines with a thigh injury. The Augsburg boss is also without the injured Jeffrey Gouweleeuw, while Dimitrios Giannoulis will serve a one-match ban for an accumulation of yellow cards.

Predicted lineup: Dahmen; Banks, Schlotterbeck, Zesiger; Fellhauer, Rexhbeçaj, Massengo, Pedersen; Reider, Claude-Maurice, Kade
