Borussia Dortmund captain Emre Can has received adulation from teammate Nico Schlotterbeck and head coach Niko Kovac since the club’s successful 3-0 victory over UEFA Champions League play-off opponents Sporting Lisbon last Tuesday.

Can, who has often been singled out for his underwhelming performances in recent months by a portion of BVB fans, has impressed at centre-half in recent games.

The 31-year-old put in a solid shift against VfB Stuttgart last weekend despite the adverse 2-1 scoreline. He also defended with confidence against Sporting Lisbon even when the Portuguese club unfurled their talisman, Viktor Gyokeres, in a 30-minute cameo.

"Emre has been playing really well in that position for weeks. He did exceptionally well against both strikers against Sporting too. If he continues like this, he is certainly the person who is best suited to the position at the moment," said coach Kovac.

Can’s central defensive partner and compatriot Nico Schlotterbeck also praised his efforts and what he brings to the backline.

"With Emre you can play a high chain because he is fast. I think he does that well with and against the ball, he has a lot of speed. He hasn't had an easy time (lately)," Schlotterbeck added, highlighting the criticism received from fans and in the media.

Traditionally a combative defensive midfielder by trade, Can has had most of his joy at centre-half this season. It leaves head coach Kovac in a position of luxury with Waldemar Anton and fit-again Niklas Sule battling for the place alongside Nico Schlotterbeck in the heart of the Schwarzgelben defence.
