FC Schalke 04 are winless in their last six games, having followed a 2-0 DFB-Pokal exit against Dynamo Dresden with a 0-2 Bundesliga defeat to RB Leipzig at the Veltins-Arena on Saturday.
After the game, Schalke goalkeeper Loris Karius didn't mince his words when assessing the club's struggles.
“We have to get out of this together. It's a shit situation,” Karius admitted in an interview with Sky.
“It's not getting any easier. We have to work, work, work. Score goals, score goals, score goals.”
Schalke coach Miron Muslic, meanwhile, came to his team's defence.
“We really tried everything within our capabilities. I have no criticism of the team. We threw ourselves into every challenge,” the coach insisted.
Despite suffering another defeat, Muslic even felt that his side had shown signs of improvement.
“We took a step forward today, even if it was a very, very small one,” he noted.
“We have to keep going and learn quickly.”
The result leaves Schalke in 16th place, but they could be overtaken by 1. FC Union Berlin on Sunday if the capital club manage to pick up at least a point against 1. FC Köln.
The Royal Blues are also in danger of setting an unwanted record: only FC St. Pauli have previously gone without scoring in their first five home matches of a Bundesliga season.
