Florian Wirtz has faced significant criticism for struggling to live up to expectations at Liverpool following his big-money move from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025.
According to Lothar Matthäus, however, the media in both Germany and England have been too quick to judge the 23-year-old for his performances at Anfield.
“The media in Germany and England are being unfair to Florian Wirtz,” Matthäus said in an interview with RTL/Sky following the 23-year-old’s recent impressive performances for Germany.
The Germany legend sees Wirtz as “an outstanding player and absolutely indispensable for the German national team.”
“I have some contacts in England and regularly hear that he's putting in very good performances. Perhaps sometimes he doesn’t have the standout moment like he did with that outstanding goal against Serbia. At Liverpool, he is involved in sequences that subsequently lead to goals,” Matthäus added.
Wirtz got on the scoresheet in Germany’s 2-0 win over Serbia last week, but he's still searching for his first goal for Liverpool after six appearances this season.
