Freiburg confirm Müller's re-capture

SC Freiburg officially confirmed the re-capture of former keeper Florian Müller yesterday.
The official confirmation of VfB Stuttgart keeper Florian Müller's return to SC Freiburg came late yesterday. Germany's Kicker Magazine reports that the two clubs have agreed upon a base transfer fee of some €1.5 million. Müller no longer had a future in Swabia after being displaced by back-up net-minder Fabian Bredlow late in the season. Stuttgart continue to seek a general upgrade over both Müller and Bredlow on the transfer market.

Müller will initially be slated for the #2 role in Breisgau as it is no secret that the SCF wish to begin the season with Germany U21 starter Noah Atubolu between the sticks. Atubolu having demonstrated some weaknesses at the ongoing UEFA U21 European Championships nevertheless means that it could be possible for Müller to rise again. The 25-year-old played his best professional season at Freiburg during the 2020/21 COVID campaign.

"I have fond memories of the season at Sport-Club and I want to build on them," the Saarland-native remarked in a statement accompanying the signing, "I'm looking forward to the competition in Freiburg and I'm looking forward to an SC season with the fans behind me - I didn't get to experience that two years ago because of Corona."

"We are very happy to have completed our goalkeeper trio with Florian's skills," SCF personnel boss Klemens Hartenbach added, "There are clear internal agreements [about who will start] at beginning of the season, but there should be solid competition between Benjamin Uphoff, Noah Atubolu and Florian Müller."
