RB Leipzig's Kevin Kampl says he plans to acquire German citizenship following his retirement from the Slovenian national team.

Kampl, 28, was born and raised in Germany after his parents moved from Maribor in northeastern Slovenia.

"Now that I've retired from the national team, that's an issue. I was born and raised here. I would also like to live here later. I feel like a German," he said in an interview with Bild.

"When I was born, I could have had dual citizenship. But we didn't thematize it back then," Kampl explained.

Kampl made 28 appearances for Slovenia, scoring two goals.
