The 32-year-old was born in Hamburg and looks forward to returning to the city which he describes as 'special'.
"I have never made a big secret of the fact that Hamburg is something special for me. Whenever I have come here to play in the Bundesliga, I have always stressed that this is my home and that HSV have always remained part of my home. So it's all the better that this has worked out," Harnik told HSV's website.
According to Bild, HSV don't have to pay a loan fee, but will take over half of Harnik's salary which amounts to a total of €2 million.
If HSV win promotion to the Bundesliga, they will be obliged to pay a transfer fee of €1 million to sign Harnik on a permanent deal next summer.
