Lucien Favre: 'With our squad, it might be better to play with three at the back'

Having tested a formation with four at the back in pre-season, Borussia Dortmund coach Lucien Favre admits it might be better to play with a three-man defence.
After experimenting with a four-man backline in the build-up to the new season, Borussia Dortmund coach Lucien Favre reverted to three at the back for Monday's 2-1 win over Sparta Rotterdam in a friendly.

Based on his side's pre-season displays, Favre acknowledges that his team is better suited for a system with three defenders, but says he believes it's important to be able to switch between different systems if needed.

"With our squad, it might be better to play with three at the back," Favre told Kicker.

"We train several systems and also need to be able to switch to a four-man backline," he added.

Favre and Dortmund begin their 2020/21 campaign with a DFB-Pokal clash against Duisburg on Monday.
