Bayern Munich came painfully close to reaching the Champions League final last season, but ultimately lost 6-5 on aggregate to eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals.
Vincent Kompany is now targeting the trophy in Europe’s premier club competition this season, but knows there is plenty of hard work ahead for him and his Bayern side.
“At the very beginning of this season, I made it very clear that we would like to win the Champions League. But that phase where you have to say it out loud is now over; now we have to deliver,” the Bayern coach said in an interview with Sky and RTL.
“We are now at a point where we first have to get through the group stage. Once that is over, you have a new situation, where you might get an easier or a very difficult path, and that has an influence. In the end, you have to be stronger than every team, and that’s not easy. But the goal is there, and it will always remain there,” Kompany added.
After a thumping 5-0 win over Bodø/Glimt in their Champions League opener, Bayern’s next game in the competition will be away to Norwegian side Viking on Tuesday.
Before that, Kompany’s side face Augsburg away from home in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
