“Things are seriously wrong" - Reports of discontent in Werder Bremen squad

Local media reports suggest there is an air of discontentment around the Werder Bremen camp due to recent results.

Despite playing well in Dortmund but ultimately slipping to a 3-0 defeat, Werder Bremen's wait for a first win since early November goes on.

This, according to the DeichStube, is one of the reasons why things are apparently starting to simmer within the club in recent days.

“Things are seriously wrong in the locker room,” DeichStube writes, with the work of head coach Horst Steffen being increasingly questioned.

Besides the poor results, the exclusion of 32-year-old midfielder Leonardo Bittencourt also caused a stir.

The veteran was surprisingly not in the squad against his ex-club BVB; instead, players like departing Skelly Alvero sat on the bench.

Furthermore, Bittencourt is not the only Werder player who has been “dissatisfied with his current standing under Steffen for some time”.

However, at Bremen's press conference earlier this morning, the 56-year-old coach countered all rumours of potential unrest.

"The mood after six games without a win is annoying, not good. I disagree with some of the reports that have been circulating.

“I see the team every day, and the atmosphere in the locker room and on the training pitch is good,” explained Steffen.

The seemingly under-pressure coach will hope to turn things around this Friday night as they host Eintracht Frankfurt at 20:30 CET.
