With 1. FC Union Berlin having conceded 17 goals in their first four Bundesliga games following Friday’s heavy 7-0 defeat to Bayern Munich, the capital club could look to strengthen their defence during the international break.

With the transfer window closed, Union can't sign players currently under contract with other clubs. However, they can still explore the free-agent market.

According to Bild, former Bundesliga defenders David Alaba and Jannik Vestergaard are potential options for Union Berlin.

Both players are available on free transfers after leaving Real Madrid and Leicester City respectively, and could provide the experience and leadership the club seems to lack in central defence.

Union Berlin will return to action against Elversberg on October 10 following the international break.
