Xabi Alonso gives update on Wirtz injury: "There's no reason to be pessimistic, but..."
Florian Wirtz has been limited to just 10 minutes of action in Bayer Leverkusen's last three games and has been struggling with a thigh problem since Die Werkself's 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund on April 21.
The plan, Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso said after Sunday's 5-0 win over Bochum, is to get Wirtz into full training this week and have him play a role in Saturday's match against Augsburg before the club's two finals (Europa League against Atalanta on May 22 and DFB-Pokal against Kaiserslautern on May 25).
“We have a plan with Flo. If things go well, he'll take part in training again on Wednesday or Thursday and can play a bit against Augsburg,” Xabi Alonso said, according to Kicker.
“It would be good for him to play a bit before the two finals. But it's still too early to say anything.”
"I'm not worried, but physiologically anything can happen. There's no reason to be pessimistic at the moment, but we'll wait and see.”
