2. Bundesliga: Arminia Bielefeld end winless run with narrow victory over VfL Bochum

Arminia Bielefeld secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over VfL Bochum on Sunday, with substitute Benjamin Boakye scoring a late winner to end the visitors’ winless run and extend Bochum’s wait for a first home victory of the 2. Bundesliga season.

The decisive moment arrived in the 78th minute at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion, where Boakye finished off a swift attacking move to settle an otherwise low-key Westfalen derby. The result gave Bielefeld their first league win since mid-August, while Bochum were left frustrated after struggling to turn their possession into clear-cut chances.

The opening 45 minutes proved a frustrating affair for both sides, with neither team able to establish a consistent attacking rhythm. Bochum enjoyed spells of possession but struggled to find the necessary creativity in the final third, while Bielefeld remained organised and looked to exploit opportunities on the counter-attack.

The rainy conditions at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion did little to improve the spectacle, as both teams appeared reluctant to take unnecessary risks. Clear-cut chances were scarce, and the sides went into the interval level at 0-0.

The second half initially followed a similar pattern, although Bielefeld gradually began to threaten more regularly. Their best opportunity before the breakthrough came in the 67th minute, when a dangerous corner caused confusion inside the Bochum penalty area. Philipp Hofmann attempted to clear the ball with his head, but it struck Bielefeld’s Maximilian Großer before ricocheting against the post, allowing the hosts to escape without conceding.

With the match still goalless, Bielefeld head coach Oliver Kirch turned to his substitutes in search of a breakthrough. The decision proved decisive as Boakye, introduced in the 64th minute, put the visitors ahead 14 minutes later.

The move began with a long ball from Louis Sicker, who found Joel Grodowski in space. Grodowski then squared the ball for Boakye, who kept his composure in front of goal and slotted home to give Arminia a precious 1-0 lead.

Boakye had been booked six minutes earlier for striking Bochum’s Maximilian Wittek in the neck, but he ultimately made the headlines for his contribution at the opposite end of the pitch.

Bochum attempted to respond in the closing stages, but the hosts were unable to find an equaliser as Bielefeld held firm to claim all three points.

The victory represents an important result for Bielefeld, who had been without a league win since the middle of August. The three points lift Arminia above Bochum and into ninth place after seven matches.

For Bochum, the defeat extends a disappointing start on home soil, with the club still waiting for their first home victory of the campaign after four attempts. Their lack of cutting edge in attack was once again a concern, as greater possession failed to translate into enough meaningful opportunities.
