In a meeting between two sides looking to turn inconsistent starts into more positive momentum, Sunday’s clash presents an opportunity for Bochum to secure their first home league victory of the season, while Bielefeld will be desperate to end their difficult run away from home.
Bochum begin the weekend ninth in the table with seven points from seven matches, having struggled to translate some encouraging performances into consistent results. Uwe Rösler’s side have shown promise in possession but have been let down by a lack of attacking efficiency, particularly on home soil.
Their most recent league outing ended in a narrow 2-1 defeat away to Hannover 96. Bochum had previously beaten Dynamo Dresden 2-1 before drawing 1-1 with Greuther Fürth, but their inability to build on those results has left them looking for a response following the international break.
The hosts have scored just once in their three home league matches so far, making their attacking output a clear priority ahead of Sunday’s encounter. Rösler has acknowledged the need for improvement in the final third after using the extended break to work on his side’s finishing and attacking movement.
Speaking ahead of the game, Rösler said:
“We have clearly addressed the lack of efficiency and our attacking presence in the penalty area during the international break. I hope we can show progress in those areas. It is also important that we continue creating chances. The more often we get into those spaces, the greater the probability that we will score.”
Rösler also confirmed that Mats Pannewig would feature against Bielefeld, with the midfielder’s physical presence expected to be particularly valuable against an opponent who pose a significant threat from set-pieces. Karol Mets is also fit to play after managing his workload during the international break.
Bielefeld, meanwhile, arrive in Bochum sitting 13th with five points from six league matches. Oliver Kirch’s side have endured a difficult start to life under their new head coach, recording just one victory so far, although their performances have offered glimpses of their attacking potential.
Their only league victory came in a convincing 3-0 win over Energie Cottbus, with Joel Grodowski scoring all three goals. The forward has already found the net five times this season and will be central to Bielefeld’s hopes of causing problems for the hosts.
However, the visitors have struggled to reproduce that form on their travels. Defeats against Karlsruhe, Nürnberg and Darmstadt have left them without an away point in the league, with defensive inconsistency proving costly. A 2-2 draw against Heidenheim in their most recent outing at least offered some encouragement heading into the trip to the Ruhrgebiet.
Kirch has called for greater concentration defensively and more conviction in front of goal, recognising that his side must improve at both ends of the pitch if they are to climb the table.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s match, Kirch said:
“It is about showing greater concentration and consistency defensively, conceding fewer goals, covering more situations and reducing losses of possession. At the same time, we have to take our chances. Shooting has therefore been a major focus in training recently.”
The Bielefeld coach also acknowledged Bochum’s quality in possession, warning that his players must prevent the hosts from delivering crosses into the penalty area and give particular attention to the threat posed by Philipp Hofmann.
Despite their disappointing away form, Bielefeld will take confidence from their physical intensity and ability to press aggressively. Kirch’s side rank among the league’s strongest teams for running distance, intense runs and sprints, and they will look to use those qualities to disrupt Bochum’s rhythm.
Bochum, meanwhile, will need to find a way through that pressure while remaining alert to the visitors’ threat from long balls, throw-ins and set-pieces.
The hosts have enjoyed the better of recent meetings at the Ruhrstadion, winning three of their last four home encounters with Bielefeld. Their most recent home meeting ended in a 1-0 victory, with Hofmann scoring the decisive header, while the sides played out a 1-1 draw in Bielefeld last season.
With Bochum targeting their first home league win and Bielefeld desperate to collect their first away points, both sides have plenty to play for on Sunday.
