According to reports, Albert Riera, currently with Slovenian side NK Celje, is the favourite for the Eintracht Frankfurt coaching job.
Sky Germany and BILD believe the Spaniard could now take over the position following the dismissal of Dino Toppmöller.
Final talks are currently underway between the two clubs, although Celje are reportedly reluctant to let their successful coach go.
However, Frankfurt are confident of finding a solution soon and a transfer fee will be payable for the 43-year-old in any case.
"We are on the home stretch of reaching an agreement," said board spokesman Axel Hellmann at Eintracht's meeting on Monday.
Links to other potential candidates, including former RB Leipzig coach Marco Rose, appears to have gone quiet lately.
With the Hessen side currently eighth in the table, their goal of qualifying for European competition again is particularly at risk.
(Update: 23:50): Sky Germany reports that talks between Frankurt and Riera are now focused solely on the transfer fee.
Personal terms between the Spaniard and the Bundesliga club are not an issue. Riera remains extremely professional and is waiting for an agreement.
