Germany take down Hungary to secure place in round of 16

In their second match of Euro 2024, Germany defeated Hungary 2-0 to secure their place in the knockout stages.

Germany made it two wins out of two at Euro 2024 with a 2-0 victory over Hungary in Stuttgart on Wednesday night.

In a fairly even opening 15 minutes, Kai Havertz had the first real chance of the game, but Peter Gulacsi stretched wide to save from close range.

Then, in the 22nd minute, Germany found the opener. Hungary seemed to have dealt with the threat posed by Jamal Musiala and Ilkay Gündogan, but then Willi Orban fell to the ground following a slight push from the latter. Gündogan took over again and played the ball back to Musiala, who finished from close range to become the first player to score two goals at Euro 2024.

Hungary's first real threat came in the 26th minute when Dominik Szoboszlai curled a free-kick towards the top corner, but Manuel Neuer made an excellent save to keep out the Liverpool midfielder's shot.

Rolland Sallai looked to have levelled the scores late in the first half, but the Freiburg attacker's goal was ruled out for offside.

Germany remained in control after the break, but Hungary created the first real chance of the second half when Barnabás Varga rose high to meet Roland Sallai's cross, but his effort was off target.

Instead, Julian Nagelsmann's troops effectively put the game out of Hungary's reach in the 72nd minute when Maximilian Mittelstädt's low cross was coolly turned into the net by Ilkay Gündogan.

Hungary almost pulled one back late on when Manuel Neuer failed to hold onto a ball in the box, but Joshua Kimmich was on hand to ensure Germany kept their clean sheet.

The win puts Germany on six points and guarantees them a place in the round of 16. Julian Nagelsmann's side face Switzerland in their final group game on Sunday in what could be a battle for the top spot in Group A.
