When Canada play their World Cup opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday night at 21:00 CEST, they will be without their captain.

As Canada coach Jesse Marsch confirmed at his pre-match press conference, Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies will not be involved as he continues his recovery from a muscle injury.

However, Marsch said Davies is progressing well, having undergone an MRI earlier this week.

“It showed very positive signs that he’s healing incredibly well, almost completely, so we’re getting ready to ramp things up,” Marsch said.

“He’s shown, as he always has, a really strong ability to recover from muscle injuries.

“We’re really hopeful that over the next days and weeks we can accelerate things to give him a chance to contribute.”
