Ter Stegen admits frustration with bench role

Marc-André ter Stegen admits it was a 'tough blow' for him to watch both of Germany's recent Euro 2020 qualifiers from the bench.
Marc-André ter Stegen has expressed his frustration with his current role in the German national team.

The Barcelona star was on the bench for both of Germany's recent Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Netherlands and Northern Ireland, with Manuel Neuer playing both games.

"It is not easy to find an explanation [for not starting] as I am giving the best account of myself in each game to make the decision more difficult," ter Stegen said, according to Marca.

"I am trying [to become the first-choice goalkeeper] anyway, but this trip with the national team has been a tough blow for me."

The 27-year-old has made 22 appearances for Germany.
