Both Raphaël Guerreiro and Eric Dier were unable to go the full 90 minutes for FC Bayern München in Saturday afternoon's 1-3 loss to VfB Stuttgart. Guerreiro had to be subbed off in the 17th with an ankle injury. Dier - after suffering cranial lacerations in an aerial duel - was able to complete the first half, yet was taken off just prior to the restart.
Thomas Tuchel provided updates on both players in his post-match interview with Sky Germany. Dier's cuts should not serve as any serious impediment to a Wednesday Champions' League deployment. Guerreiro, on the other hand, looks to miss out on the second leg of the UCL semi-final tie against Real Madrid. Tuchel noted with a wince that the Portuguese international most likely won't be available.
"Rapha is not well at all, he's walking around on crutches," Tuchel told his his interviewer, "He [Guerreiro] hexed. Now he's probably out for the second leg - bitter, bitter, bitter for us."
Tuchel did note that he was pleased with the second-half performance of Dayot Upamecano. The Frenchman was on the mend from his own ankle injury was able to perform at a high level for much longer than expected. Matthijs de Ligt - whose absence in Tuesday's first-leg draw against Real effectively ended up costing Bayern the win - should also return to full team training tomorrow.
Tuchel - surely not wishing to turn to center back Min-Jae Kim after the South Korean's disastrous performance in the first leg - thus has three options for two slots in central defense. One assumes that - as has been the case in recent weeks - de Ligt and Dier are the preferred pairing.
