Report: Schalke are looking for a new first-choice goalkeeper

It seems Schalke 04 might want to bring in a replacement for Alexander Nübel after all.
Schalke 04 are looking to bring in a new first-choice goalkeeper for the 2020/21 season, according to a report from Sport Bild.

The club's head of sport, Jochen Schneider, claimed in February that there are no plans to sign a replacement for Alexander Nübel, who will be joining Bayern München on a free transfer at the end of the season, as Ralf Fährmann is set to return from loan to compete with Markus Schubert.

However, Sport Bild claims that Schalke are are in fact looking for a new number one and that a few candidates have already been identified.

One of them is Zack Steffen, who is currently on loan at Fortuna Düsseldorf from Manchester City. According to the report, Schalke have already approached Steffen's representatives. Schalke probably can't afford to sign the 24-year-old on a permanent deal, but he could make the move to Veltins-Arena on loan.

Apparently, Schalke are also keeping an eye on Norwich City's Tim Krul, who might want to move elsewhere in case of relegation.

Meanwhile, 'The Royal Blues' are understood to have cooled their interest in Basel's Jonas Omlin after learning that he would cost around €10 million.

Schalke coach David Wagner recently said that Markus Schubert is set to keep his spot in goal until the end of the season.
