Julian Nagelsmann explains decision to bench Angelino

RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann has explained why he put Angelino on the bench for two games in a row.
RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann says Angelino knows why he has been left out of the line-up for two of the club's last three Bundesliga games.

Angelino watched his teammates beat Mainz 5-0 from the bench and was left out of the line-up again in mid-week, coming on as a second-half substitute in RB Leipzig's 2-2 draw with Hertha BSC.

Asked about his decision to put the Manchester City loanee on the bench, Nagelsmann told rblive.de:

"'Angel' knows why he didn't start against Hertha. It was a different issue, Angel is aware of that, and we discussed it with him. He wasn't left out for performance reasons."

The left-back was back in the line-up for RB Leipzig's 4-2 win over FC Köln on Monday, replacing the suspended Marcel Halstenberg.

Nagelsmann thought Angelino did well going forward, but felt the 23-year-old had a few problems defensively.

"He had a good game. Nevertheless, he was involved in two situations, where you could see that he has problems defending as part of a four-man defence," he said after the game.

Offensively, Nagelsmann said, Angelino was "great, very active and showed good vision".

"But he has to learn to defend the space behind him and not just watch the ball," the RB Leipzig coach underlined.

Angelino will be hoping to keep his spot in the starting eleven, when RB Leipig face Paderborn at home on Saturday.
