Müller keen to recruit Max Meyer back to Schalke
A successful stint at FC Luzern in Switzerland may lead to 28-year-old German striker Max Meyer potentially earning a new start in German football. The four-times-capped senior German men's national team international has scored a total of 19 goals across all competitions over the course of two seasons with his current Swiss Super League outfit. It was revealed this week that Meyer will be departing Luzern as a free agent this summer.
To say that Meyer's career took a total nosedive after he left his primary academy club FC Schalke 04 in 2018 would be a gross understatement. The Oberhausen native struggled to earn playing time with EPL side Crystal Palace over the three ensuing seasons. The south London outfit ended up giving Meyer his outright release in January of 2021. Then relegation-threatened FC Köln picked him up, but he was not able to work his way into the team.
After failing to catch on with Fenerbahçe (and also on loan with FC Midtjylland), Meyer signed a one-year-deal with Luzern in the summer of 2022. His first-season performance levels were sufficient enough to warrant a contract extension. For the first time in four years, his estimated market worth has trended upwards. Meyer maintains an estimated market worth of €2 million in the latest transfermarkt update.
Current FC Schalke 04 keeper Marius Müller spoke on his friend and former teammate's situation in a recent interview with Germany's "Sport Bild" tabloid. The Königsblauen appear to have avoided a 3. Liga relegation scare for now and will soon be preparing for another season in the 2. Bundesliga. Müller made clear that he thought that Meyer might be a good fit for a second division campaign with his old club.
"As a friend, I'm naturally keen to get him interested in us," Müller said, "He originally convinced me to join Schalke. I would be happy to sit next to him in the locker room. That's why I might call him once or twice more than I already do. I would be very grateful as I believe he's a very good player who can make a big difference."
