Weghorst: Wolfsburg must rediscover defensive strength

Wout Weghorst says Wolfsburg are looking for the defensive stability that was ever-present throughout last season.
Wout Weghorst has warned that Wolfsburg need to rediscover the defensive stability that was key to the club's impressive fourth-place finish last season.

"We are always in a good position to score goals, but our biggest strength last season was our defensive solidity, which was down to our positioning on the pitch, tactical approach and the fact that we did extremely well when we weren't in possession. We need to improve again in that regard," Weghorst told Kicker.

The 29-year-old is aware that new Wolfsburg coach Mark van Bommel has a different philosophy than Oliver Glasner, who was at the helm for the last two seasons.

"But we also do a lot of things similarly. And with the other stuff, we just need a bit of time. We work hard in training," siad the Dutch striker.

Wolfsburg kick off their Bundesliga campaign against newly-promoted VfL Bochum this afternoon.
