RB Leipzig captain David Raum didn’t hold back when assessing referee Benjamin Brand’s performance in his side’s 1-3 Bundesliga defeat to Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.
“The referee was unfortunately not worthy of the game; it was too much for him,” Raum told Sky after the match.
“I told him that during the game. He was completely overwhelmed. I also told the linesman, who I think nodded a little.”
“He wouldn’t listen – the way he sent players away, the head movements, the looks. I don’t like it,” Raum added.
“We’re always told to speak to referees properly. I just don’t like his style. There are referees in the Bundesliga who do it in a really likable way. Today, unfortunately, was not one of those days.”
Among other things, Raum was unhappy with an incident just before the 1-3 goal, when Leverkusen’s Robert Andrich went to the ground after a challenge and appeared to hit the ball with his arm in his own penalty box.
“I think it’s a shame the referee didn’t even review it,” he said.
