Dortmund boss reveals Hummels' contract has been extended

Mats Hummels' Dortmund contract now runs until 2023.
Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has confirmed that Mats Hummels' contract has been extended by a further year until 2023.

Hummels' contract was due to run out in 2022 and included a clause that would see it automatically extended if he made a certain number of appearances.

But Watzke has revealed that Dortmund have decided to remove the clause and extend the contract prematurely.

"Mats had a clause in his contract," Watzke said in an interview with Sport1.

"We thought it was unacceptable for the contract term of a leading player to depend on the number of games he plays. That is why we have removed this clause. He will be with us until 2023."
