Report: Barcelona interested in Gladbach midfielder

Reports this morning have emerged suggesting that Barcelona are once again dipping their heels into the free-agent pool, targetting Borussia Mönchengladbach out-of-contract midfielder Denis Zakaria.
Transfer Market Web (aka Tutto Mercato Web) reported this story first, suggesting that Barcelona manager Ronaldo Koeman is interested in bolstering his midfield with the 24-year-old Swiss midfielder currently on an expiring deal with Die Fohlen.

It was reported earlier in the week that Zakaria and Gladbach were set for talks over a contract extension. This comes after a tumultuous summer for Gladbach where the Swiss midfielder was adamant on leaving the club on a free in 2022.

Zakaria has been in great form, drumming up plenty of attention this season from the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Roma, Real Madrid and Barcelona circling around the midfielder, with the Italian club even said to have "agreed terms with the midfield stalwart".

Gladbach's sporting director Max Eberl spoke in August about the contract situation for Zakaria saying: "With Denis, we have been trying to extend his contract since October. Denis and his management have told us relatively clearly that they favor a transfer this summer if something comes up. Let's wait and see what happens."
