After a disastrous World Cup campaign in Qatar, Germany will be looking to get off to a good start in 2023 when they take on Peru in their first match of the year on Saturday night at the MEWA Arena in Mainz.

In the absence of the injured Manuel Neuer, Marc-André ter Stegen will be in goal and Joshua Kimmich will wear the captain's armband, Germany coach Hansi Flick confirmed at a press conference on Friday.

Germany will also be without Bayern Munich prodigy Jamal Musiala due to injury, while a number of experienced players, including Leroy Sané, Antonio Rüdiger and Ilkay Gündogan, have been left out of Flick's squad.

In total, Flick named six rookies in his squad, with Borussia Dortmund right-back Marius Wolf the most likely starter.

Two players certain to start are Niclas Füllkrug and Timo Werner, who will form a duo up front, with Flick planning to switch from his usual 4-2-3-1 to a two-striker formation.

"We will play with two strikers tomorrow, Timo Werner and Niclas Füllkrug. We're going to line up a bit differently in midfield. That means a different approach for our full-backs. I'm curious to see how we implement that. Both have done very well in training," said the German coach.
