Matthäus urges Bayern to sign Kai Havertz this summer

Bayern München should do everything they can to land Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen this summer, says Lotthar Matthäus.
Lothar Matthäus has advised Bayern München to try to sign Bayer Leverkusen starlet Kai Havertz this summer.

Havertz has been linked with a number of Europe's biggest clubs, and the former German international says Bayern should snap him up before one of the big clubs from abroad.

"I wold advise Bayern to sign Kai Havertz this summer. It's better to spend a few more millions than to see him move abroad," Matthäus said in an interview with Sport Bild.

"I could imagine him playing for Barcelona next to Messi. He would also fit in well at Real Madrid. Kai Havertz can play in almost all positions in midfield, even defensively," the former German international said.

It might not be possible for Bayern to sign Havertz this summer, though - even if they want to. Bayer Leverkusen boss Rudi Völler has made it clear numerous times that he fully expects the 19-year-old to stay at BayArena for the 2019/20 season.

According to Matthäus, Havertz has been better than any other player in the Bundesliga this season.

"For me, Kai Havertz is the player of the season. He led the team forward and consistently scored the crucial goals. He was even stronger than Dortmund's Marco Reus," he said and added:

"Kai Havertz has everything. Talent, modesty, speed, a sense of situation and an eye for his teammates. He is dangerous in front of goal and has strong nerves. He has charisma and confidence, and his body language shows that he's a big personality."

Havertz made 42 appearances for Leverkusen during the 2018/19 season with 20 goals and seven assists to his name.
