Mats Hummels is set to return to Borussia Dortmund from Bayern München - and he has a good reason to do so, according to BR.

As per the information of the German news outlet, Hummels held a meeting with the Bayern bosses two and a half weeks ago at which he was informed that he would have virtually no chance of beginning the 2019/20 as a regular starter.

Instead, Hummels was told, Lucas Hernandez and Niklas Süle are set to be the preferred partnership in central defence.

"It was signaled to Hummels that no matter how well he would prepare for the new season, he most likely wouldn't have a chance of becoming a regular starter. Mats probably thought, 'Then I'd rather go somewhere else where I can still play an important role'," BR reporter Christoph Nahr said.

Meanwhile, the BVB bosses have repeatedly expressed an interest in taking Hummels back.

"He has seen the opportunity to become a leading figure. From the central defence, he could be a player who helps leading Dortmund's young team forward," Christoph Nahr explained.

Bayern signed Hummels from Dortmund for €35 million in 2016.
