Mendyl, Bentaleb and Konoplyanka set to depart Schalke

Schalke 04 plan to get rid of Hamza Mendyl, Nabil Bentaleb and Yevhen Konoplyanka.
Hamza Mendyl, Nabil Bentaleb and Yevhen Konoplyanka have all been told to look for a new club this summer, says the club's head of sport, Jochen Schneider.

"We've spoken with Hamza Mendyl and have decided that he will look for a new challenge. The same goes for Nabil Bentaleb and Yevhen Konoplyanka," Schneider said at a press conference, as quoted by the club.

David Wagner was also present at today's press conference - his first since he was appointed the club's new coach - and the former Huddersfield Town manager said he's eager to bring the club back on track after a disappointing 2018/19 campaign that saw them finish 14th.

"I don't think I need to say how unbelievably happy and proud I am to be back. I think that it's extremely important that we put the past behind us and focus on what's ahead —however, we also can't ignore it completely," Wagner said and added:

"What matters is developing a mindset where team spirit and the desire to work hard are the most important things. If we are able to do that, then we will be able to close the gap to the top from last season."
