Hoeness: Ter Stegen has no claim to play for Germany

Uli Hoeness believes Manuel Neuer fully deserves to be Germany's number one goalkeeper as he is 'much better and much more experienced' than Marc-André ter Stegen.
Bayern München president Uli Hoeness has backed Manuel Neuer to continue in the role as Germany's first-choice goalkeeper after Marc-André ter Stegen recently underlined his intention to play more for 'Die Mannschaft'.

It's not the first time ter Stegen has expressed his frustration with his lack of game time for Germany, but Hoeness says 'he has no claim to play at all'.

"The press in western Germany supports him extremely, as if he had already won 17 World Cups," Hoeness told Sport1 and added:

"He has no claim to play at all. There is no discussion that Neuer is Germany's number one. We don't put up with our players being harmed.

"Ter Stegen is a very good goalkeeper. But Manuel is much better and much more experienced. He can play as long as he's fit. He will always be the best," Hoeness underlined.

Sport Bild reported on Wednesday that Manuel Neuer is considering retiring from the German national team after the European Championship in 2020.
