Lothar Matthäus: Bayern are no longer feared by their opponents

Bayern München don't intimidate their opponents like in the past, according to Lothar Matthäus.
Bayern München are no longer feared by their opponents like they used to be, argues Lothar Matthäus.

The German champions are just seventh in the Bundesliga after Saturday's 2-1 loss to Borussia Mönchengladbach that saw 'Die Fohlen' come back from behind after being 0-1 down.

And Matthäus believes Bayern's defeat to Gladbach exemplifies that the Bavarians have lost the the strong mental upper hand they used to have against any opponent in Germany.

"The opponents have lost their fear and awe of Bayern München. Even if teams fall behind, they still believe they can win, and some even manage to do so. This was extremely rare in the past," Matthäus wrote in a column for Sky and added:

"If Bayern continue to weaken, and Gladbach, Leipzig or Dortmund continue to play consistently well, we will have tension until the end of the season.

"Except for Bayern and their fans, everyone is happy. But every should know that you can never write off the record champions," the former German international stated.

Gladbach are currently top of the league - one point clear of RB Leipzig and five points ahead of Borussia Dortmund.
