Lucien Favre: 'I prefer a 4-3-3 system'

Despite doing well in a 3-4-3 system towards the end of 2019, Borussia Dortmund coach Lucien Favre says he could go back to playing with four at the back.
Borussia Dortmund coach Lucien Favre won't rule out that he could revert to a four-man defence in the second half of the season.

Favre switched to three at the back for Dortmund's game against Hertha BSC on November 30 and played with a 3-4-3 system in the remaining games before the winter break.

However, speaking to Kicker, the Dortmund coach says that he actually prefers lining up in a 4-3-3 formation.

"We needed to change something before the game against Hertha BSC. The 3-4-1-2 system is good, I like it, but I personally prefer the 4-3-3. Every system has its flaws and its advantages. In my opinion, two systems work best in the long run: 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3. All the big clubs play with four at the back," he said and added:

"We have done well with three centre-backs. That surprised the other clubs, but it maybe won't surprise them so much now.

"My favorite system is and remains a 4-3-3. Either that or a 4-1-4-1, but the difference is not that big," Favre said.

In their first Bundesliga game of 2020, Dortmund take on Augsburg on Friday.
