Robin Gosens clarifies Schalke comments
Robin Gosens would like to play for Schalke 04 in the future if the possibility arises.
Atalanta's Robin Gosens has clarified comments about a potential move to Schalke 04 in the future.
"I still want to play for Schalke in the Bundesliga. If they want me, I'll go. It's my team," Gosens was quoted as telling Bergamo TV last week.
When asked to elaborate on his reported statements, Gosens, who was linked with Schalke last summer, told Goal and Spox:
"I was asked if I still want to join Schalke after last summer's speculation. I answered that it's still my biggest dream to play in the Bundesliga and that I remain a fan of Schalke."
"If the timing is right and every fits at some point, I would like to play in the Bundesliga - and preferably for Schalke. Everything else is fictitious or wrongly translated and doesn't correspond to the truth.
"I have never made any secret of the fact that the Bundesliga and Schalke would be my dream combination, but I don't know when and if that will become reality. I currently play for Atalanta. We're still in the Champions League, and I'm hoping we will participate again next season. That's why I have extended my contract until 2023," Gosens said.
Gosens was recently praised by Lothar Matthäus who stated that he believes the 25-year-old deserves to play for Germany.
And while Gosens says he hasn't "heard anything" from the German Football Association yet, he's happy that his performances are being recognized in his home country.
"Maybe it will increase the focus I get in Germany. Either way, it's simply incredibly positive," Gosens said about Matthäus' praising words.
The Atalanta player, who can play at left-back and as a left midfielder, has played 21 games this season, racking up seven goals and four assists.
