Ottmar Hitzfeld: 'Manuel Neuer is still the best goalkeeper in the world'

Bayern München would be wise to extend Manuel Neuer's contract, says Ottmar Hitzfeld, who believes the 34-year-old is the best goalkeeper in the world.
At the age of 34, Manuel Neuer remains the world's best goalkeeper, according to former Bayern München coach Ottmar Hitzfeld.

"For me, Manuel Neuer is still the best goalkeeper in the world today," Hitzfeld told Sky and added:

"Of course, a coach can't say that he plans with him until he is 40. In football you can usually only plan from game to game. But Manuel Neuer can play at this top level for several more years if he doesn't get injured."

On Bayern's talks with Neuer about an extension of his contract, which runs until 2021, Hitzfeld said:

"The parties must decide whether the contract will be extended by one, two, three or four years and under what conditions. My only wish is that they find a solution that suits everyone and that he stays longer in the Bayern goal. After all, he's a good guy, a captain and a leader. In other words, he's everything a coach could wish for."
