Manuel Neuer unfazed by competition: 'I'm convinced that I'm the best'

Manuel Neuer isn't worried about competition at Bayern München and in the national team.
Bayern München goalkeeper Manuel Neuer insists he is still better than anyone else at the age of 34.

Neuer, who has so far managed to keep Marc-André ter Stegen behind him in the national team, is set to face new competition at Bayern München following the arrival of Alexander Nübel from Schalke 04.

But that is of no concern to the 34-year-old, who is very confident in his own ability.

"What coach wouldn't put his best players on the pitch? I'm convinced that I'm the best, even though I'm no longer 17," Neuer told 11Freunde.

"When you're the number one at Bayern or in the national team, you are constantly in a competitive situation. In this respect, little will change for me when a new goalkeeper joins us," he added.

Neuer, who signed a new contract with Bayern until 2023 in May, isn't planning to hang up his boots anytime soon.

"You only have one career as a professional footballer. When you end it, there's no way going back. If football becomes a burden for me, I will do like Philipp [Lahm]. But at the moment, I still have a great desire for football," said Neuer, adding that there is "always something to win".
